Laszlo Benes Returns to HSV Team in Unfamiliar Position: Lessons Learned from Defeat

He had imagined this comeback a little differently…

After a three-game red card suspension, Laszlo Benes (26) returned to the HSV team – and was in an unusual position in the 2-0 defeat in Düsseldorf. Instead of in the center of midfield, Benes (eleven goals, eight assists so far) found himself in the left winger position; Ransford Königsdörffer had to go to the bench to replace him.

Benes: “The coaching team told me the day before the game. But also that I should get the ball inside every now and then and start offensive actions.”

So Benes was somehow everywhere and nowhere – and disappeared quietly with the rest of his troops: “Everyone knows that that’s not my position. What I brought is energy and mentality. But that wasn’t so important today.”

Something else was crucial. And Benes spoke clearly about this: “We have to get stability back very quickly. Something was missing from everything: mentality, accuracy, and a lot of ball losses. This is too little. We have to play clearly, we have to recognize the situations better. We make wrong decisions all the time. Sometimes the first contact is bad, sometimes the last pass is inaccurate. We have to get up and give everything in the last nine games.”

In any case, it is difficult to imagine that the experiment with Benes as a left winger will be repeated…
