Late Penalty Equalizer Keeps Cologne’s Relegation Hopes Alive

Kainz, who had only come on as a substitute in the 72nd minute, scored the late equalizer from the penalty spot in the 95th minute after Luca Waldschmidt had failed with a penalty just after the break. The Styrian kept Cologne’s chance of at least reaching the 16th place held by Mainz and thus the relegation place alive. “We are alive, we are still here. We’re far from relegated,” said Cologne’s Mark Uth.

The Mainz team, for whom Karim Onisiwo had prepared the 1-0 through Leandro Barreiro (29th), not only failed to pull away, but also have to do without Onisiwo’s ÖFB colleague Phillipp Mwene at least in the next game. The 30-year-old was sent off with a red card two minutes after the late equalizer after a frustrating foul. Mainz, in 16th place, is still five points ahead of the penultimate team from Cologne before the last three rounds, but is still within sight of the non-relegation places.

Zero number at Gladbach – Union

Before that, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Union Berlin had shared the points in a zero score, which only helped both teams to a limited extent. The Gladbachers therefore still have a cushion of four points over Mainz, Union is level on points with VfL Bochum and two points ahead of the relegation place in 14th place.

The Gladbachers were missing ÖFB team player Maximilian Wöber, who suffered a slight muscle fiber tear in his thigh in the 3-4 defeat at Hoffenheim last week. His compatriot Stefan Lainer was in the starting line-up against Union and played for 66 minutes; Christopher Trimmel came on as a substitute for the Berliners in the final phase.
