Julien Carraggi Falls in 2nd Round of Madrid Badminton Masters

Julien Carraggi was eliminated in the 2nd round of the Madrid Badminton Masters, a World Tour Super 300 event worth $210,000. The Brussels badista, 43rd in the world, was beaten by the Japanese Yushi Tanaka (BWF 50), who went through qualifying, 21-11, 21-14. The game lasted 28 minutes on Thursday in the Spanish capital.

In the first round, Carraggi got the better of Taiwanese Chi Yu Jen (BWF 38), 22-20, 21-18 in 39 minutes.

This season, Julien Carraggi reached the quarter-finals of the German Open at the beginning of March. He was eliminated in qualifying for the Indonesia Masters in January, and in the first round of the Swiss Open last week.

Belgian number 1, Carraggi is a three-time national champion among seniors, a quarter-finalist at the European Games last year and a bronze medalist (mixed team) at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games in 2018.

He is expected to be officially qualified for the Paris Olympics on May 1 when the rankings are published by the international badminton federation. He currently occupies 19th place of the 38 players who will be present in Paris.
