FCB, News: Nagelsmann praises Joshua Kimmich’s winning gene

Julian Nagelsmann thinks highly of Joshua Kimmich – even in his new role as right-back. “Josh is a very important player for us because he embodies a lot of what is sometimes missed in young players of the new generation who are new to the professionals,” said the national coach before the classic international match against the Netherlands in Frankfurt (8.45 p.m./RTL).

What did he mean by that? “The absolute desire to win in every situation.” With this style, Kimmich “sometimes gets on one or two people’s nerves,” said Nagelsmann about his former Munich protégé, but on the other hand it is “very valuable and contagious for everyone.”

As an example, Nagelsmann brought up the scene at the final whistle in France (2-0), where Kimmich celebrated the victory “with both arms stretched forward” and an “extremely loud” scream. “You wouldn’t think it was a test match. But that’s exactly how he is, he’s very real and doesn’t pretend,” said the national coach. Kimmich “played very well” in Lyon – offensively and defensively. Of course he had “a speed deficit” against superstar Kylian Mbappé, but he also “defended very cleverly and very vigilantly in space”.

However, it bothers the 29-year-old Bayern professional “a little bit that people always say he doesn’t want to play in the position,” reported Nagelsmann and emphasized: “He is generally very open. The most important thing for him is that he plays and can help the team. He does that in terms of content and mentality.” That’s why the former midfield boss still has “great importance” for the DFB team.
