Jannik Sinner dismisses Tomas Machac and reaches the semi-finals in Miami

Only beaten in 2024 by Carlos Alcaraz, eleven days ago in Indian Wells, Jannik Sinner confirms his very strong start to the season. Wednesday evening, his victory in two sets against the Czech surprise Tomas Machac (6-4, 6-2) allowed him to reach the semi-finals of the Miami tournament, his second presence in the last four in two Masters 1000 contested this season.

As a reminder, the Italian also won the Australian Open in January and the ATP 500 in Rotterdam in February. The No. 2 seed will face the winner of the match between defending champion Daniil Medvedev and Nicolas Jarry in the semi-finals.

Possible reunion with Medvedev

Against Machac, Sinner made the break in the first game. But the Czech, who was playing the third quarter-final of his career on the ATP circuit and only the first in Masters 1000, immediately broke. The winner of the Australian Open therefore had to wait until the seventh game to once again steal Machac’s serve and win the first set 6-4, with a shutout.

But after this first set won after 52 minutes of play, Sinner raised his voice and clearly took the upper hand. Sovereign on his serve, he took twice in a row that of an opponent suffering more and more, at 1-1 then 3-1, to finally win in 1 h 31 min.

This victory is already Sinner’s 20th this season, making him the first player to reach this total. It sets the stage for a potential rematch against Medvedev in the semi-finals after the two men met in the final in Miami last year and in the final of the Australian Open in January.
