Joel Embiid Overcomes Obstacles: Leads Philadelphia 76ers to Victory in Face of Adversity

With a lot of struggle and cramp!

Thanks to Joel Embiid’s (30) 50-point gala, the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks with a 125:114 win.

However, the superstar is not in a partying mood – in addition to his damaged knee, he also suffers from mild facial paralysis.

After his outstanding performance, the star sits at the press conference wearing black sunglasses and hiding his eyes. Still plagued by other injuries, Embiid is once again defying all odds – but reveals that he is currently not only suffering from his knee. Recently also suffering from a mild form of Bell’s palsy, also known as idiopathic facial palsy.

What is this exactly?

Bell’s palsy is a sudden feeling of weakness on one side of the face. This happens when the facial nerve is affected. Only one side of the face is always affected. In around 85% of cases, feelings return within three weeks.

At the press conference, Embiid said: “It’s pretty annoying, you know, with the left side of my face, my mouth and my eye. So yes, it was hard, but I’m not giving up, so I have to keep fighting. But yeah, it’s unfortunate. That’s how I see it too. But that’s no excuse. I have to keep going.”

The paralysis also partially affects his vision. Initially, the paralysis was noticeable through a headache, but the star put it down to a migraine: “I think it started a day or two before the game in Miami (in the play-in tournament/ed.), and I had bad migraines and thought it was nothing.”

Despite the illness, Embiid leads the 76ers to victory in the third game of the round of 16 series. With his 50-point gala, he achieved a career high for the play-offs.

The basketball star has had a difficult season. In February he underwent knee surgery and was out for two months – only returning shortly before the play-offs. Nevertheless, he remains confident: “I just try to keep pushing. Like I said, I won’t give up. Even on one leg I’ll keep trying. But no, that’s not an excuse. I always have to play better, better and better. I was lucky tonight. I hit a few shots.”

Fortunately, the superstar can face his latest obstacle with a bit of a smile: “I just hope it stays that way. I have a beautiful face. I don’t like my mouth facing the other way.”
