Jannik Sinner Continues Unbeaten Streak at Indian Wells with Dominant Victory

Jannik Sinner still hasn’t tasted defeat since the start of 2024. For his entry into the Indian Wells Masters, the Italian battled for a set before dominating Thanasi Kokkinakis in 1h20 (6 -3, 6-0). Faced with an opponent unable to bounce back after a first break conceded in the match, the recent winner of the Australian Open won nine consecutive games to confirm his status as the overwhelming favorite in the Californian tournament. In the next round, Sinner will cross swords against the winner of the duel between Borna Coric and Jan-Lennard Struff.

Will Jannik Sinner manage to remain undefeated as long as Novak Djokovic did during his famous year 2011? Before falling in the semi-final of Roland-Garros against Roger Federer, the current world number one had chained 41 consecutive victories on the circuit. Thanks to this convincing victory against Kokkinakis, Sinner now has 16 victories in a row in as many matches. An extremely positive dynamic which can be explained by the quality of play of the Transalpine on hard courts, but also its mental strength which has been clearly improving for several months. Facing the Australian colossus, Sinner won hands down in a showdown without ever letting the slightest flaw show.

Seven unforced errors for Sinner

However, Kokkinakis entered this meeting well. Building on his clear victory against Marcos Giron in the first round, the outsider was able to count on his first ball to dominate his first three service games. Opposite, Sinner responded with aplomb even if the winner of the Rotterdam tournament had to defend a break point in the fifth game of the match. And then at 4-3 against him, Kokkinakis began to feel the pressure at the end of the round. The Aussie saved a first break point, but could not prevent Sinner from converting the next one. In 54 minutes, the native of San Candido won the first set (6-3).

Frustrated by this outcome despite good resistance, Kokkinakis lost his striking precision. His first ball became increasingly rare and the unforced errors multiplied (22 compared to only 7 for his opponent over the entire match). Gradually faced with a wall, Kokkinakis only scored five points during a second round completely controlled by a still invincible Sinner (6-0). Sinner’s best performance at Indian Wells was a semi-final last year against Carlos Alcaraz. This year, the Italian could meet the Spaniard at the same stage, but perhaps not with the same winner…
