Interpreter Accused of Robbing MLB Star Shohei Ohtani of Millions

Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers was apparently robbed of millions of dollars by his interpreter. The Major League Baseball (MLB) National League club did not confirm the allegations, but announced the dismissal of the translator.

The California daily Los Angeles Times previously reported that West Hollywood law firm Berk Brettler LLP was investigating the actions of translator Ippei Mizuhara after the newspaper learned that Ohtani’s name had surfaced in a federal investigation into a suspected illegal bookmaker.

Interpreter is said to have been in debt

“In responding to recent media inquiries, we discovered that Shohei was the victim of a massive theft. We will turn the matter over to the authorities,” said Berk Brettler. According to ESPN, at least 4.5 million dollars (around 4.15 million euros) were transferred from Ohtani’s bank account to the bookmaker – presumably to offset the interpreter’s debts.

MLB’s gambling policy prohibits players, umpires, officials or employees of the club or league from betting on baseball or making illegal bets on other sports. While sports betting has been legalized in most American states, online and retail sports betting remains illegal in California.

Japan’s Ohtani, who is both an excellent pitcher and hitter, signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers last December.
