Intensified Search for Missing Judoka in Logroño: National Police to Expand Operation

The National Police will expand the search for Javier Márquez, who disappeared 11 days ago in Logroño, to the area around the Ebro River in Zaragoza and Tudela, as explained this Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Higher Headquarters of La Rioja, Olga Fernández Maeztu. On March 2, trace of the young 20-year-old judoka was lost in the area near the Ebro, and since then a search operation has been maintained.

Much of the operation has focused on the Ebro River bed, where divers from the National Police have worked, in the Logroño section; and the Civil Guard, outside the municipal area of the capital of Rioja, towards Zaragoza, with support from drones, helicopters, agents on foot and dogs expert in finding people. In addition, there is also the help of dozens of volunteers, many of them from the Riojan city of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where his family resides.

The high river bed has made the search difficult, although it was already possible to cross this Tuesday, as the water level is decreasing little by little. “Taking advantage of the fact that you can navigate, we are going to go with specialized units to sections of Zaragoza and Tudela,” the police spokesperson detailed in statements to journalists.

In Logroño, as explained, the Special Operations Groups (GEO) and dogs specialized in searching for people have focused their work on the bed of the Iregua River, which flows into the Ebro in the capital of Rioja. Members of Civil Protection and agents of the Judicial Police also participate in these tasks.

Police are considering several theories

Fernández Maeztu explained that, in addition to the intense search along the river, the Old Town of Logroño has been combed, the area where the young man was last seen, after saying goodbye to his friends to go to his sister’s house; and the city center. He has indicated that the Police have “different open hypotheses and several lines of investigation” about the disappearance of the young man, which are under secrecy; and, in addition, the academic environment of Javier, who studies in Zaragoza, has been studied.

Javier Albo, one of the volunteers from Santo Domingo who participated this Tuesday in the search for the judoka, explained to journalists that they try to maintain spirit and faith that their task will be successful, but they are aware that every day they It happens, it’s more complicated not to break down. In this municipality, about 50 kilometers from Logroño “there is a lot of concern” and “the city is extremely sad, at the same time dedicated to searching for the boy and supporting his family,” he added.
