Hamburg Open Tennis Tournament to Return as French Open Dress Rehearsal in 2025

Tennis fans in Hamburg had to sweat for 16 years. After losing its Masters status in 2009, the clay court classic at Rothenbaum moved from its original spring date to mid-summer.

Now the good news: From 2025, the traditional tournament will take place again as a dress rehearsal before the French Open in Paris! According to the new calendar published by the ATP on Friday, the men will play at the Hamburg Open (ATP 500) from May 18th to 24th, 2025.

“The change in the calendar will have a positive effect on the Hamburg ATP tournament and, above all, the players will be happy,” says DTB President Dietloff von Arnim. “Because immediately afterwards, the highlight of the clay court season takes place with the French Open in Paris.”

Rothenbaum will be back in spring from 2025!

In the short clay court season between Wimbledon and the start of the hard court tournaments in the USA, it has often been difficult to convince the top stars to appear in Hamburg in recent years. This will now be much easier for the new Belgian-Spanish creators from the Tennium agency led by managing director Kristoff Puelinckx. Especially since only one 250cc event will be played in Geneva in 2025 parallel to the Rothenbaum.

“With the new organizer and due to the long-term planning security (commitment until 2037, editor) we can continue the success story at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum. “The Hamburg Open will remain one of the top addresses in the international tennis circuit,” says von Arnim.

This year the tournament with title defender Alexander Zverev (26) will take place for the last time from July 13th to 21st – squeezed between Wimbledon and the Olympics.

The relocation is also good news for the women’s tournament. Because of the duplication of dates, the “Hamburg European Open” (WTA 250) with figurehead Angelique Kerber (36) has to move to the city park from July 20th to 26th this year and will be held with mobile structures on the THC Horn-Hamm facility .

From 2025, the women will now have the summer date exclusively for themselves – and could return to the Rothenbaum. Provided the club on the Alster (only 21 days of third-party use permitted) agrees.

Tournament director Sandra Reichel is still keeping a low profile: “Our focus is currently on our women’s tournament in 2024. We ask for your understanding that we cannot yet comment on 2025 as the WTA has not yet published its calendar.”
