From the Catwalks to the Screen: The Journey of Mattia and Gabriele D’Alfonso

The historical fiction was a success”Mameli – The boy who dreamed of Italy“, which aired in prime time on Rai1 last February 12th and 13th and which still continues to be one of the most clicked series on Raiplay. But two very young faces also appeared on the television screens of thousands of Italians Neptune. We are talking about Mattia e Gabriele D’Alfonso, two brothers aged 22 and 20, who took part in some scenes of the television series playing two soldiers: Mattia belonging to the Austrians, due to his blue eyes and blond hair, while Gabriele to the French, given his hair and eyes brown. “There was a lot of emotion, especially because it was a historical fiction – Mattia declared to our newspaper – SOn set there was a sense of responsibility from everyone, even though there were so many kids, but the project was taken very seriously, especially for what the Unification of Italy means for our country. The emotion was so great that every now and then we asked ourselves: will we be up to this?” “People tend to look at the final result, when in reality there is a world behind it that cannot be imagined – continued Gabriele – It was very nice, because we saw how all the small cogs of this great mechanism work together and it’s wonderful, because you feel like you’re part of a project that in the end is concretely realized. It was also strange seeing yourself on television for the first time – has continued – They took some close-ups of us and I wasn’t expecting that at all, so it was also fun to go back and see the scene again“.

Mameli“, as the title of the miniseries directed by already suggests Luca Lucini e Ago Paniniis set around the 1850s and narrates the life of Goffredo Mameli: poet, patriot and author of the text of “The Song of the Italians“, the national anthem of the Italian Republic. “In my scene, in which the movements of a guerrilla were recorded, we weren’t actually told what we had to do, it was a work of improvisation which paid off in the end because we were all a little scared by the shots of the moment“, the 20-year-old told us, explaining how realism was the creators’ strong point. “Behind the film, as my brother says, you don’t understand many things – explained Mattia – Having played two soldiers, in that week we experienced their daily lives, starting from simple clothing up to seeing a rifle pointed at each other, that scene in particular struck me a lot. We also had the opportunity to experience the moments of relaxation typical of a soldier – has continued – When we were tired we sat on the floor and we also experienced how their uniforms were not very comfortable, especially because they were made of thick wool and the shirts of the time did not help given the great heat of last July – continued the 22-year-old laughing, specifying that the filming was filmed in the summer of 2023 – But, on the other hand, they contributed a lot to interpreting the character“.

Mattia and Gabriele are two brothers who currently attend the University of Rome “Wisdom“. Since he was a child, the eldest has always been fascinated by the world of acting, so much so that he took part in the theater course at the Mario De Franceschi middle school in San Giacomo, even managing to play the leading role in the end-of-year shows. Until, at the age of 15, a chance meeting on the beach catapulted him into the world of fashion where, thanks to the work of the stylist Genzano Filippo Lafontanamanaged to parade on the major catwalks of Lazio and other regionsItalia. “Fashion has never been my passion, but this randomness made me the person I am today – explained Mattia – Many times people see this environment as something purely aesthetic, where a boy perhaps appears just to appear. But, as far as we are concerned, there was a lot of humanity behind it and I believe that personal growth was precisely the driving force of today’s great models“. “It represents a continuous challenge with oneself – confirmed Gabriele, who is slowly following in his older brother’s footsteps – I have always been a very closed boy, but this environment is helping me in relationships and to believe in myself. Fashion is improvement and, for us, it is a path of growth“. Great words, those of the two brothers, which make us understand how the saying “you never judge a book by its cover” also applies perfectly to the catwalks. Their personalities, although different, are very united not only in work, but also in real life. “We discuss these issues a lot and we tend to make these speeches to motivate ourselves – explained Mattia – We are not dependent, but we admire what the other is. Where I don’t arrive, maybe Gabriele arrives and vice versa“. A depth that is not at all obvious and which is supported every day by their family, who is following them on this path. “Our parents never imposed a path on us – they declared – They have always told us to think about our happiness and follow our dreams, it is thanks to them that we are here today talking about these experiences we are living“.

While they pursue their goals and enjoy the great satisfaction of having appeared in a Rai television series, Mattia and Gabriele continue to continue their university studies, dreaming one day of reaching Milano and to start a course of acting studies.

The rest of the interview will be published in the next paper issue of “The crab“, on the newsstands of Anzio e Neptune starting Saturday 16 March.
