French Dominance Shines in Indian Wells: Seven Tricolores Triumph in First Round Raid

Excellent day for the French on Thursday in Indian Wells. The seven Tricolores entered emerged victorious from their confrontation in the first round of the Californian tournament. A real raid. Lucas Pouille quite easily disposed of the German Daniel Altmaier, 53rd in the ATP ranking, in two sets (6-4, 6-3). But the next round will be much tougher, since he will cross paths with Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded number 11.

Gaël Monfils also easily won against Max Purcell (6-1, 6-2), 71st in the world. Dominating throughout the match, the Frenchman will face Hubert Hurkacz, seeded number 8, in the second round.

The Frenchman Constant Lestienne also validated his ticket for the next round, after beating the American Denis Kudla (3-6, 6-2, 6-4), having resumed a match interrupted by rain on Thursday at midday Wednesday. Lestienne (31) has a meeting with Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime on Friday in the second round.

As for Arthur Fils, he defeated the Portuguese Nuno Borges without flinching (7-6, 6-2). In difficulty at the moment after a failed tour in South America, the young Frenchman was able to resist in the first round to snatch a tie-break, before taking off in the second. A good omen before challenging a player of another caliber in the second round: the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 23rd in the world.

Parry, Burel and Dodin strong heads

Océane Dodin battled to defeat Russian Elina Avanesyan (1-6, 6-3, 7-6). She held on in the last doubly decisive game (won 7 points to 4) to dismiss the 63rd in the world, even though she had just released three double faults while serving to win the match. The Frenchwoman has had a roller coaster ride and will be back in the second round, as she faces Daria Kasatkina.

Diane Parry (n°61) for her part dominated the aggressive Martina Trevisan (7-5, 6-3), 59th in the world, at the cost of a big fight from the baseline. Remaining calm even though she could have taken advantage of several opportunities to shorten a meeting which lasted more than two hours, the Frenchwoman awaits Leylah Fernandez in the second round (n°34).

For Clara Burel (n°47), it was a little more contested. The Frenchwoman beat the Chinese Wang Xiyu in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4). However, she had launched her match perfectly by breaking her opponent, lower ranked than her (52nd in the world), from the start. But Rennaise then conceded the first set, before finally winning the next two, and the match. The Frenchwoman, who reached the third round of the Australian Open in January, is offered the challenge of facing American world No.3 Coco Gauff in the second round on Saturday.
