To the Tandem Foundation

It all started in 2004, when Neuss entrepreneur Burkhard Zülow decided not to give personal gifts on the occasion of his 60th birthday and instead collected donations so that students with and without intellectual disabilities could do sports together. His goal was for them to break down inhibitions and fears of contact and instead learn that everyone can do something and also has strengths. Performance should also be promoted and interaction between healthy and disabled people should be practiced.

Topped up by a contribution from Sparkasse Neuss and other sponsors, a significant sum was raised that was used specifically for Burkhard Zülow’s performances. The first project also gave the initiative its name: “Tandem – Integration of disabled people through sport”.

In collaboration with the Rhein-Kreis Neuss Sports Association, the Neuss City Sports Association, the three schools in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss for the mentally handicapped as well as neighboring mainstream schools and sports clubs, Zülow AG today supports projects in various areas as part of “Tandem – Integration of Disabled People through Sport”. Sports such as football, vaulting, canoeing, judo or cycling.

Since 2010, Jutta Zülow, CEO of Zülow AG, has continued the initiative launched by her late husband.

Every year on the first Saturday in May, the Tandem Foundation invites you to a large, inclusive tandem sports festival at Gut Gnadental. The net proceeds from the festival go directly to the Tandem Foundation.
In 2010, the foundation was awarded the “Germany – Land of Ideas – Selected Location 2010” prize. The prize honors innovative concepts that promote the further integration of our country.
