Frankfurt Faces Uncertain Future with Laura Freigang’s Potential Departure

The people of Frankfurt are currently running behind their own expectations. Regardless of the sporting results, the SGE is also threatened with a prominent departure.

After three league defeats in a row, the women of Eintracht Frankfurt were able to score points again on Sunday evening. The SGE narrowly beat the bottom of the table from Duisburg 2-1. With the three points, the Frankfurt team at least consolidated fourth place – and thus remain close to the Champions League places.

A topic that concerns the club in addition to the sporting results is the future of vice-captain Laura Freigang. According to t-online information, the national player rejected an initial offer to extend her contract. Her contract in Frankfurt runs until the summer of 2025. Freigang is the face of Eintracht and, with ten points (six goals, four assists) in 16 games, is the club’s most dangerous attacker alongside Nicole Anyomi and Barbara Dunst.

In the remaining six league games they could even surpass their record from last season (ten goals, two assists). With her performances on the pitch, she attracted the attention of several top clubs last summer. Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC, Manchester City, Olympique Lyon and league rivals Munich and Wolfsburg are said to have kept an eye on the striker at the time.

“Didn’t feel like going”

Even before the start of the transfer period at the time, Freigang didn’t hesitate for long and committed to Eintracht. She posted a picture on Instagram that underlined her connection to the club. Freigang is sitting on a staircase, has the right sleeve of her shirt rolled up and is showing a tattoo.

You can see it: the number combination “069” – the telephone area code for Frankfurt. Freigang did not leave Eintracht and still plays there. In an interview with “Goal” last November, she explained her decision: “I think it’s a feeling you have. I didn’t feel like leaving, so I stayed.”

In an interview with t-online in October last year, however, she also revealed that she considers a move abroad to be attractive. “Of course you look left and right, that’s the sports business. But I’m in Frankfurt, I currently have a contract until the summer of 2025, I feel totally comfortable and don’t think about what will happen next year or the year after that,” Freigang said at the time . Now it seems as if there could be some movement again towards a potential career move. Especially if the SGE misses third place at the end of the season.

Freigang has hardly played a role in the German national team, which is currently being coached by interim national coach Horst Hrubesch. She is at most third choice behind Wolfsburg’s Alexandra Popp and Bayern’s Lea Schüller. A move to one of the two top clubs would be a logical next career step – and perhaps also one to gain a better footing at the DFB.
