François Gomez Takes on Double Coaching Role: TGB and Swiss Women’s Team – The Tarbes Coach’s Perspective

the essential Double hat for François Gomez next season since the current TGB coach will coach the Swiss women’s team and the Tarbaises. The Tarbes coach explains.

François Gomez, the current and emblematic coach of the TGB, will therefore take charge of the destiny of the Swiss women’s national team for the next 3 seasons. After the French U18 team (2002-2007) and the Swedish team (2017-2019), the Tarbais offers himself a new role in the national team which is the logical continuation of his presence at the head of the young Helvetians since two years and with the ambition of qualifying the Swiss for Euro 2025 basketball.

A new role that the Tarbais intends to carry out alongside the one he occupies within the Tarbais club.

François Gomez, this is a great challenge that you are preparing to take on.

Yes, it’s a continuation of what I’ve been doing for two years with the Swiss Federation since I was in charge of the U20s. So, the project is to bring up these generations of young players that I know and in the coming years, to take them as close as possible to a European Championship. Switzerland remains a basketball country but, in the international hierarchy, there is work to do.

Could there be more connections between Swiss players and the TGB like with Nancy Fora?

If there is talent why not. But the aim of the game is not to find players in Switzerland. For me, this is another project that is completely personal. So, the link with the TGB could exist or not. There is no strategy for that.

Will this require a lot of investment?

I have already coached Sweden while being coach of TGB. These are calendars that do not overlap, international windows where clubs stop their activity and where selections take over. So, there is no problem.

Will you be the TGB coach next season?

(smile) We will have to ask my presidents to confirm that I will still be the coach next season but, a priori, yes! Today, it’s agreed like that, so I would have both hats like many selection coaches. And then, we are structured to be able to compensate for a few days of absence of the TGB coach.

A TGB that you have worn for many years…

Yes, but men pass and structures remain. We no longer remember the men who were there before me and one day, it will be my turn.

Will you have a more general role next season?

No, in the restructuring of the staff, I think we are on the idea of having a 2nd assistant at my side. All this needs to be confirmed and validated, but we’ll start with that. I would have a team around me but, I repeat, this is not an imperative need because the national and international calendars do not overlap.

For now, is there a season to finish?

Yes with Sunday’s event which brings us back to reality because we let ourselves go a little in Montpellier. We didn’t respond at all to the real event on Sunday against a team ready to receive us. We have to pull ourselves together to end the season with the reception in Bourges. A magnificent display, Saturday evening, against the team which is in my opinion the best of the moment. It’s the last match of the season at home and we have to live up to this event, for our partners and for the public.
