The Berlin pair skaters Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Wolodin can crown their first competition season together at the World Championships. After astonishing successes and a great disappointment, the duo impressed in the short program at the World Championships.

From the triple Salchow to the triple Throwrittberger, every element was executed cleanly and elegantly: The Berlin pair skaters Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Wolodin impressed at the start of the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, Canada, and can now hope for a medal.

The German champions presented a flawless and very emotional short program to “Stay” by Rihanna – which resulted in 72.10 points and fourth place in the interim rankings, less than one point away from third place. “It was a great feeling. The atmosphere and the hall are great, there was so much energy and the audience gave us even more energy,” said Hase. “In terms of emotions, it was one of the best short programs we ran.”

And it was a great relief for both of them after the recent disappointment at the European Championships when the duo had to settle for fifth place. Afterwards, Rabbit changed her attitude and approached the matter in a more relaxed manner. “We just want to enjoy it and not think about placings,” she said in Canada: “The short program was the first step in the right direction. Now we just want to do our best in the free skate and see if that gets us on the podium.”

Not even two years of training together

After their breathtaking rise to the world class with victory in the Grand Prix final at the end of last year, Hase and her partner, who comes from St. Petersburg, suddenly went into the European Championships in Lithuania as hot title contenders. Despite the fact that they had not been training together for two years, they were number one in the pair skating world at the time. Their journey had quickly picked up speed.

But the dream of European Championship success ended in disappointment when, after a good short program, they lost the medal they thought they were sure of with a botched free skate. Things should be different at the World Cup.

Deanna Stellato Dudek/Maxime Deschamps from Canada took the clear lead in the title fights in Montreal. With 77.48 points they got a good lead over the defending champions Riku Miura/Ryuichi Kihara from Japan, who made no mistakes but had less speed. In third place are last year’s World Cup bronze medalists, the Italians Sara Conti/Niccolo Macii with 72.88 points.

After many injury problems, Annika Hocke and Robert Kunkel from Berlin were able to show their best short program of the season and landed in seventh place with 67.64 points before the final free skate this Thursday. “We had a lot of fun today,” said Hocke.
