“It’s complicated being a Dépor goalkeeper”

Riazor’s goal has been a source of debate throughout the season. It is not easy to be a goalkeeper in one of the most desired and, at the same time, demanding positions in the category. The A Coruña team had had a Ian Mackay at a high level during the last two seasons and this summer he ended up in A Coruña German Parreño with the intention of becoming the new owner. After a turbulent first few months, the man from Elche has become undisputed. In the last two days he has confirmed this with two saving performances. “It has given me very good feelings since the beginning of the season,” approves former goalkeeper Paco Liaño.who lists and analyzes its virtues: “for the tranquillity that transmits; because I think he handles the aerial game very well; With his feet I think he is very calm and in that sense even when he had to be a substitute I was convinced that it was not going to be a problem because he is an experienced goalkeeper who has gone through all the phases: from sucking the bench to enjoying ownership ”.

Jose Luis Lemos, former coach of Bergantiños, shares the vision of the goalkeeper born in Elche. His intervention ratio is low because they generate little for Dépor, but when he intervenes, it is key: “It is solving very efficiently, in some cases, like Nàstic or Sabadell, occasions that are very clear. I think it coincides at a moment that when he intervenes he is being decisive.”

Liaño knows the Riazor goal better than anyone, where he won two Zamora trophies consecutive (1992-93 and 1993-94). “In Deportivo today any position is of maximum demand, but goalkeeping adds a little more if possible. That’s why I think “We can be calm with what Germán can give us.”, Explain. To which he adds that he has merit because he intervenes little during the meetings: “It is difficult to be a Dépor goalkeeper in this category because you spend a lot of time looking and that can somehow make you unfocused.” But, he believes, Parreño has proven to be the right man: “for the most complicated moments we also have a good goalkeeper.”

José Luis Lemos analyzes a goalkeeper whom he considers “less attractive” but “efficient”: “He is a type of goalkeeper that is easily identifiable. He is not spectacular for the stands, nor does he have quick intervention or reflexes. He is very sober and confident, he minimizes errors a lot, he intervenes in the aerial game and at the start. He may not look spectacular, but he is efficient.”

Another of Germán Parreño’s virtues is, undoubtedly, his footwork. The man from Elche is an insurance in a key facet of the blue and white development. Although Idiakez has qualified his idea, from the beginning of the course the former goalkeeper from Ibiza or UCAM has been one more in the construction of the attacks. “He is a goalkeeper who most of the time starts short. He is the team’s way of playing and he serves a lot as support to the centre-backs and the midfielders, but when he has to play long, As Ter Stegen can do at Barça, he breaks two or three lines of pressure with one pass. It is one more characteristic of his game that is coming in very well for us.”highlights Paco Liaño.

Lemos, for his part, believes that he “shows confidence” with the ball at his feet and, in addition, highlights his long movement. Although the A Coruña team rarely looks for those away directly through Parreño, or has very rarely sought to attack the back of the defensive line with a direct delivery, it is a possibility that exists: “I remind him of some long kicks rushing final situations when the ball reaches the rival area. It is not a premise, it is a rarely used alternative, surely at your choice, because the premise is usually wanting to go short. But it is an alternative that you always have there. Play straight on Barbero, for example. If you can’t solve the pressure short, you have a goalkeeper who is accurate at 60 meters and you can win that second ball.”

Part of Deportivo’s improvement has also involved finding stability in goal. Germán Parreño has become indisputable for Imanol Idiakez and his participation is key for the team. Live, with the calm that characterizes him, his best moment in A Coruñawhere it is synonymous with peace in critical moments.
