Fallen Toritos de Cayey catcher Lucas Torres Vázquez: An Unfinished Journey

Lucas Torres Vázquez, the Toritos de Cayey catcher who was murdered on Wednesday night and whose body was found lying on the pavement of a section of the PR-14 highway in the same municipality, was not active in the current Superior Baseball season. Double A.

The 20-year-old was listed as an inactive reserve for the team, as confirmed by the press officer of the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation (FBPR) and the league, Héctor “Titito” Rosa, to El Nuevo Día.

However, Rosa recalled that Torres Vázquez did play in the last Double A final series between the Toritos and the eventual champions Arenosos de Camuy, which concluded on October 1.

In said series, Torres Vázquez consumed three at-bats, Rosa reviewed. He reappeared in the fourth game of the final, after an indefinite suspension imposed by the FBPR, due to his arrest along with four other people, for allegedly conspiring and participating in two murders, which occurred in August and October 2022.

The Department of Justice would later announce that the case was dismissed by the Court of First Instance of Caguas and the Federation announced at the end of August of last year that it was lifting the player’s punishment.

And although he was eligible to play since the semifinal series, the team activated him by moving to the final series. He reappeared in the fourth game, which the Toritos ended up winning to tie the series 2-2.

This newspaper tried to contact the Toritos’ representative, Alberto Rivera, but calls and messages were not immediately answered. He later sent written statements warning that the team would not issue further comments out of respect for Torres Vázquez’s family.

“In this painful moment we unite and stand in solidarity with the family, for the loss of Lucas Torres Vázquez. Out of respect for the memory of Lucas, who was our member in life, we will not be making any other expression,” the team wrote in a press release that the representative himself sent to this medium.

Torres Vázquez was a catcher who in 2021 was selected by the Los Angeles Angels organization in organized baseball. At just 17 years old he signed as a professional and the Angels assigned him to their rookie league team in Arizona, but three days later, he was placed on a temporary “inactivity” list.

For unknown reasons, Torres Vázquez returned to Puerto Rico without having played a single game.

He would turn 21 this coming July 18.
