Excitement about the DFB jersey for the European Football Championship: Barbie on the pitch

On Thursday, DFB supplier Adidas revealed what the German national soccer team will wear at the home European Championships this summer. In addition to the traditional white main jersey with black, red and gold stripes on the shoulders, the away jersey causes excitement: a mix of pink and purple, with no black, no red and no gold to be seen.

Since then, criticism has been raging on social networks, after all, for decades the away jerseys were kept in muted green (not a color that can be found in the German flag), with occasional bright red, which was acceptable because it is also the color of Bayern Munich.

But many of these jerseys were simply boring. The same cannot be said about the new away jersey. The only question is: Why is everyone going crazy now? Because it’s a women’s color? Because they are afraid that Barbie will now overshadow not only Ken, but also the German soccer player?

The color has long been worn by men, most recently on Sunday by Hollywood star Ryan Gosling, who appeared on the Oscar stage as Ken in a pink suit. Pink is also the color of Inter Miami, which looks great on world footballer Lionel Messi, for example. And Manuel Neuer also wears them when he is in goal for Bayern Munich.

According to the supplier, the jerseys should represent the diversity of the country. There was no need for such a message. But the good thing is that the women’s color will certainly stand out in men’s football, at the latest on March 26th, when the German team will wear the pink jersey for the first time in Frankfurt and perhaps even irritate their opponents a little.
