Empowering Women Through Badminton: Rinconada Club’s Commemoration of International Women’s Day with + Women’s Badminton Program

The Rinconada Badminton Club has presented for the second year a calendar of activities to commemorate 8M, International Women’s Day.

The IES Carmen Laffón library served as the setting to launch the ‘+Women’s Badminton 2024’ program that seeks to publicize the sport and its equality, since badminton is one of the most egalitarian sports that exist, especially in the section of clubs, where all teams must field men and women, in the same number and with the same importance, during the matches. Its president, Isabel Venteo, referred to this at the presentation ceremony. “Badminton is one hundred percent mixed, boys and girls are on equal terms, they work and make an equal effort, the points they both get are worth the same, we all add up and row in the same direction.” Furthermore, there is a female majority in the management of the club. “The board is majority female. The woman has an important role in the group and she stands out with the same merits as the man, from effort, commitment and equality.

At the table she was accompanied by the Equality delegate, Noelia Ramírez, and the Sports councilor, Francisco José Rodríguez, as well as the Equality coordinator of the IES Carmen Laffón, Eva Domínguez. As spectators, the Violet Patrol of the IES, a group of students who work on equality and women’s rights during recess.

Ramírez thanked the club for its commitment to “promoting egalitarian attitudes, thoughts and behaviors, in order to achieve real equality,” and encouraged other local clubs to work in this regard, to knock on the door of Equality to carry out joint activities. around March 8. “It is always important to work for equality, to instill it as one of the great values ​​that emanate from sport so that young people grow up with that internalized concept.”

For his part, the person in charge of Sports stated that “many teams have visualized the importance of sport as a vehicle to try to achieve full equality” and reflected with the students in attendance that “you will be with me that in the locker rooms of any sport you practice there is no men and women, there are only companions.” In addition, he highlighted the Equality program ‘Locker Room Talks’ that “trains the youth team in values, respect and co-education, distancing them from sexist stereotypes.”

Next, a Round Table was held, which featured the voices of women who carry out different functions within sport. The members were: Marta Ferreira, Shuttle Time coach; Mª Carmen Artacho, player and champion of Spain, Aurora Sánchez, referee; Arantxa Barriga, sports tutor Ceeda Program in Huelva; Isabel Venteo, president of the club and María Bernal, EDF IES Carmen Laffón teacher and professional soccer player.

In it, the situation of women in the sports field related to badminton was presented, the challenges that exist today, the opportunities and the path that remains to be followed to achieve real and effective equality.

During these days, Badminton Rinconada will have several events. Technical training days for women from the Equality and Sports program of the La Rinconada City Council and for other badminton clubs in the province and an open day for all ages at the Fernando Martín Pavilion. In addition, from March 5 to 10, a photographic exhibition of the women’s history of this sport is exhibited in the municipality and on Sunday, March 10, on league day “we will offer all the women who come to the pavilion our Iberdrola Cup , an exclusively female competition, achieved last year and we will distribute t-shirts with the motto ‘+Badminton for women’.
