From Delivering Newspapers to Football Fame: The Rise of Max Kruse

From paperboy to millionaire!

Max Kruse (35) has had this steep career. In his podcast “Flatterball”, the ex-professional chats openly and honestly with his friend Martin Harnik (36/TuS Dassendorf) about his football career. Of course also about coal. He didn’t have much of it at first.

“I delivered newspapers. That was the first money I earned myself. Back in Reinbek, I delivered newspapers at 7 a.m. on weekend mornings,” reveals Kruse. And he was a rascal: “I systematically skipped a street every week so that I could get home a little earlier. Always a different street.”

From 2005 onwards, the former cult striker earned around 420 euros per month in his first year of training as a freight forwarder. There was more gravel than footballer when he came to Werder Bremen at the beginning of 2006.

“I was 17 years old when I went to Werder. Then it really started. I had a youth A contract and got 1200 euros,” says Kruse. “You come from 400 euros and Werder simply gives you 1200 euros. Then you think to yourself: wow, awesome!”

Kruse started at Werder with 1200 euros

But that was just the beginning. “It didn’t really start for me until I was 18, when I signed my first professional contract. There was a jump to 6,000 euros per month. As a young player, it was difficult for me to classify that,” said the ex-national player. “The more money I got, the more carelessly I spent it.”

It’s good that Harnik’s brother took care of his finances: “Back then he dragged me to the DKB bank. To this day I’m still trying to reach someone so I can withdraw money.” Nevertheless, he always had enough money available.

“At some point I lost touch with money,” Kruse admits. “I earned 12,000 euros a month at St. Pauli and leased an M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG. I just shelled out the money.”

The former Wolfsburg star continued: “I played online poker because I wasted my money, went to the casino in the evening and wasted my money. My motto in life has always been to live in the here and now.” With an estimated 250,000 euros per month, no problem with the Wolves.

Nevertheless, he also invests his money cleverly and has been investing in real estate, among other things, since 2009. “My father always had my back and saved most of the money I received,” says Max.
