Elderly Woman Scammed of Money and Valuables by Fraudsters from Naples: Investigations Lead to Arrests

A 50-year-old and a 38-year-old, both from Naples, were reported for aggravated fraud in competition because, according to the Carabinieri’s investigations, they stole several thousand euros (including cash and valuables) from an elderly woman from Caldarola, telling her that her daughter was in great difficulty. The story began in November when the pensioner filed a complaint with the military, explaining that a man had called her, posing as her nephew, and stating that her mother had serious problems with the law due to missed payments. . She then added that it was necessary to deliver some money to a bailiff, who would be coming by shortly. And shortly afterwards, the self-styled bailiff showed up at the woman’s house and had 350 euros in banknotes delivered, as well as several gold jewels (worth several thousand euros). The guy then left hastily, without even giving her time to ask what had happened to her daughter. At that point the investigations began by the carabinieri who combed through the public video surveillance images and those of commercial establishments. They soon managed to verify that the fraudster, to go to the victim’s home, had gotten out of a car driven by an accomplice. Then, once the scam was completed, the two immediately left the town. But the military’s investigations revealed that the car had been rented by a company in Naples, at the hands of a person with numerous complaints of fraud. Not only that, according to the investigations, the same individual had stayed in a hotel in northern Italy in January, together with a fifty-year-old from Campania, also with numerous criminal records. And both had been checked in Puglia a few days before the incident, on board that vehicle. As if that wasn’t enough, in the following days one of the accomplices was reported in Abruzzo for a scam committed in the same way. Furthermore, he would also have worn the same clothing, including a baseball cap. However, thanks to the collaboration between the various barracks, the carabinieri identified the fifty-year-old as the man who apparently got out of the car to reach the old woman’s home in Caldarola. While the accomplice driving the car would be the 38-year-old, who had rented the vehicle. The investigations were conducted through the analysis of telephone records.
