Dynamic Duo Mittelstädt and Führich Shine at VfB Stuttgart

It’s happening at VfB Stuttgart. And usually a lot on the left side too. Maximilian Mittelstädt and Chris Führich received special praise from the coach.

VfB Stuttgart continues to ride its own wave of success. Union Berlin couldn’t stop the Swabians either; on Friday evening it was a very confident 2-0 victory for VfB over Köpenick. Stuttgart therefore remained clean in their third duel with Union this season. Sebastian Hoeneß saw a deserved victory, a “mature performance”. With minimal flaws, his team mostly ensured that the Berliners had scoring opportunities. “We were a bit careless,” said Hoeneß, referring to the scenes when goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and Pascal Stenzel made bad passes in their own penalty area.

Because the Iron Men did not take advantage of these mistakes and VfB once again converted their dominance in the game (70 percent of ball possession) into goals, the next step towards the Champions League remains in the end. A lot of play went down the left side, where Maximilian Mittelstädt and Chris Führich – dream goalscorers to make it 2-0 – kept increasing the pace and creating chances. “They show that they work together almost every weekend this season,” Hoeneß praised his duo.

Mittelstädt’s cell phone “is always on”

When asked whether his protégés could also deliver this together in the national team, Hoeneß didn’t have to think for long. “They have played really well and played their part. They are in really good form. Maybe these are good omens and good impulses that a national team can also need.”

Führich’s strength in one-on-one situations and Mittelstädt’s deep runs are a weapon this season, and the duo themselves know that. “Because I often run over him, we create a majority on the outside,” said Mittelstädt. His congenial partner has already invited him to the national team, but he is also aware of the competitive situation. “There are also other players who have a lot of quality,” said Führich. Mittelstädt would of course accept a call from national coach Julian Nagelsmann. “My cell phone is always on.”
