VIVA – The Indonesian national team is currently filled with naturalized winning players. Currently, there are 11 names on the list of players called by coach Shin Tae-yong for the 2026 World Cup qualifying match in the Asian zone.

Dewa United coach, Jan Olde Riekerink, said that the Indonesian national team underestimated itself because many local players actually had hidden talents.

“Now they (the Indonesian national team) take everything from the Netherlands (players of descent), but don’t forget to educate the players themselves (local),” said Jan Olde Riekerink.

“Because for me Ricky Kambuaya is an example, he is a subject that I like and he wants to learn. If you learn the basics, you will become a very good player,” he said.

Akun admits that he follows developments in the Indonesian National Team. In fact, according to him, Indonesia has local players who are no less good.

“I think Indonesia has very technical players, but when I see the players in the national team playing they are a little more defensive,” said the Dutch coach.

“It is very important for Indonesia to create its own identity and then invest in basic structures and youth education. I think this is the biggest challenge in Indonesian football,” he explained.

The Indonesian national team has recently been aggressively naturalizing players. Several names have even become the focus, such as Justin Hubner, Ivar Jenner, and Jordi Amat. Then, there are Thom Haye and Ratnar Oratmangoen who are one step away from becoming Indonesian citizens.
