Drama in Montreal: Loena Hendrickx falls off the World Cup podium after falling in the free freestyle

After a poor free freestyle, Loena Hendrickx missed out on a medal at the Figure Skating World Championships in Montreal. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto shone and won her third world title in a row. The World Cup was also a disappointment for Nina Pinzarrone (17), she finished 15th after a new nosebleed.

After a beautiful short freestyle, Loena Hendrickx took first place at the Figure Skating World Championships in Montreal. She also came on the ice with a – literally – beautiful outfit for her free freestyle, but that went wrong.

Was it stress or a physical discomfort? Hendrickx could not conjure up the jumps and elements from her skates as she had wished: some triple jumps became doubles and halfway through her exercise she also hit the ice after a jump.

In character – but clearly not 100 percent physically – she reached the end of her free freestyle. Her injured ankle was clearly bothering her when she stepped off the ice and the “I’m devastated” to brother and coach Jorik spoke volumes.

The fall even cost Hendrickx a medal, because with 200.25 points Hendrickx ended up on the podium in 4th. She fell just over 3 points short of bronze.

Sakamoto is world champion again, nosebleed hinders Pinzarrone

The world title might not have been there anyway, because defending champion Kaori Sakamoto performed as expected in the free freestyle. The Japanese impressed with her jumps and combinations and won her third world title in a row.

From the Belgian angle it ultimately became a free freestyle to quickly forget, also for Nina Pinzarrone. The 17-year-old figure skater suffered another nosebleed just before her free freestyle.

After a few tears in the wings and with cotton wool in her nose, Pinzarrone went onto the ice. Her concentration was not optimal and logically neither was her free freestyle. She fell back to 15th place in the final standings.

Pinzarrone: “I panicked and had to breathe through my mouth”

Nina Pinzarrone’s free freestyle turned into a minor drama. Just before she hit the ice, the wounds in her often bleeding nose had to be re-cauterized without anesthesia. As a result, she started her practice later.

“I was in a panic. That’s why I couldn’t laugh. I had to breathe through my mouth. It was either drive or not. Four minutes under these conditions is very difficult,” explains the 17-year-old Belgian.

She didn’t regret driving anyway. “I knew, of course, that I couldn’t give my best performance like this. Panic and stress made it very difficult. When I fell at the beginning, I had to think about where I could do the combination. That had never happened to me before. My score and place play a role. then no more role.”

I’m exhausted.

It won’t be a world title for Loena Hendrickx anyway, she knows that immediately at the end of her free freestyle. Her ankle is clearly bothering her when she leaves the ice.

Hendrickx falls!

Halfway through her exercise, things go wrong for Loena Hendrickx. First she doesn’t get enough rotation in a jump and a little later she also falls. How much will that cost her in the final bill?

Hendrickx’s first jump combination doesn’t quite work out. After her triple Lutz, there is “only” a double run, she had planned a triple.

There’s Loena Hendrickx! What can our compatriot do?

Isabeau Levito also gets the audience in Montreal to their feet. The American steps off the ice with a smile after a great freestyle.

With 212.16 points in total, she makes a strong claim for a medal.

Loena Hendrickx will need a personal record to become world champion. Our compatriot needs 145.99 points in her free freestyle to stay ahead of Sakamoto.

With almost 150 points for her free freestyle, Kaori Sakamoto sets the bar very high for the competition. Who can still jump over that bar without falling?

Her next combinations and jumps also come out really well. This Sakamoto is making a bid for a new world title, her third in a row. She is actually emotional after her exercise.

Sakamoto’s first jumps are of excellent quality. The Japanese goes all out and can make the difference with her jumps.

Now things are getting serious and the medals will be distributed. Defending champion Kaori Sakamoto is the first contender to take the ice. What can the Japanese do?

Joy and sadness for South Korea in this last session: Kim does excellently and takes the lead after a beautiful free freestyle, You does not stay straight and steps off the ice disappointed.

The warm-up did not go smoothly for Loena Hendrickx, she missed her landing during one of her jumps and ended up on the ice.
