Danube Dragons Secure Strong Start in AFL Title Defense

The Danube Dragons started their title defense in the Austrian Football League (AFL) with a clear victory.

The Viennese team, led by European champion quarterback Alexander Thury, celebrated a 23-7 home win in their first game of the season against the Raiders Tirol on Saturday.

In bright weather conditions, the home team got off to a good start in front of around 1,200 fans who made their way to Donaufeldplatz and could cause the Tyroleans some problems, especially with new signing Steve McShane.

However, it took until the second quarter to take the lead, when Lorenz Laggner put the Dragons in the lead with the first touchdown of the game.

Debutant immediately stands out

After that, the Donaustadt team continued to play big and a little later they took a 14-0 lead through McShane, who also made the preliminary decision a little later with a punt return over 44 yards to make it 21-0.

The Raiders reduced the lead to 21:7 in the final quarter with a touchdown from Tonko, but a safety from Schneider made it 23:7 and the game was decided a short time later.

“The Raiders played strong on defense. It took us to get into the game. It was also crazy weather today. Our defense played really well. The offense was good too, we have to finish the drives better. Like “I told the players that you get better the more games you play. Next week we have the game against our city rivals,” said Dragons head coach Fred Armstrong.

The Dragons continue their game against the Vienna Vikings on Easter Sunday (from 2 p.m.).
