The Cuban men’s archery team closed this Wednesday in second place in the team modality of the South American Championship hosted by the city of Maricá, in Brazil, and which they attend as guests.

Hugo Franco, Juan José Santiesteban and Javier Vega began the round of matches in the recurve bow with a 5-1 victory over Colombia to advance to the final, according to a note published by the sports portal Jit.

On the other side of the organization chart, the host favorites defeated Chile 6-0, led by Marcus D’Almeida, number one in the universal ranking, and in the title dispute they repeated the sweep over the Cubans, with close scores of 57-56 , 56-51 and 56-54.

This Thursday the individual matches of the tournament will be held and Hugo, sixth in the double round at 70 meters that defined the pairings, will face the Panamanian Francisco Osorio in search of a place in the round of 16.

Juan José will have as his rival the local Gustavo Paulino Dos Santos and Javier against the Chilean Ricardo Soto, in series that seem affordable for those from the Island.

The media reports that in the next phase the story could be different, especially for Javier, who would have to face D’Almeida. Both faced each other at the XIX Pan American Games in Santiago 2023, and the representative of the island surprisingly emerged victorious.

If Hugo advances, his second opponent will be the winner of the match between the host Mathus Gomes and the Chilean Tomás Peña. Juan José could stretch his goal in that instance by facing the Colombian Arcila, second in the qualifying round.

The Cuban archers take advantage of the opportunity to get fully in shape, because in a few days they will enter the continental competition that will distribute the last tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
