Caroline Garcia Advances to Third Round in Miami, Sets Up Reunion with Naomi Osaka

We take the same and start again. Saturday, Caroline Garcia qualified for the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami by defeating Viktoriya Tomova, like in Indian Wells ten days ago. Except that the Bulgarian did not last three sets like in California, but gave up due to injury while the French n°1 led 6-1, 5-2.

With authority, the Lyonnaise, 27th player in the world, completed the first round in 25 minutes. At the start of the second set, she obtained a break point on her opponent’s first two engagements, which the 73rd player in the world was able to fend off. The third opportunity was the right one for Garcia.

A reunion with Osaka for Garcia

At the change of ends, Tomova had her lower back manipulated by a physiotherapist and after a long interruption, led 0-40 on the Frenchwoman’s serve, but was unable to convert any of these three break points. Garcia ended up confirming her break, breaking away 4-2 then 5-2 after once again taking the Bulgarian’s service. She then decided not to go any further.

Garcia, who is trying to regain confidence after a failed tour in the Gulf (defeat in the first round in Abu Dhabi, Doha then Dubai) and an elimination in the round of 16 in Indian Wells, will face the Japanese for a place in the round of 16 Naomi Osaka, victorious over the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (6-2, 7-6). A meeting which will be anything but trivial for the two players in search of renewal.
