Carlos Sainz won the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix

The Ferraris finished first and second in the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia, the third race of the world championship. The Spanish driver Carlos Sainz won after starting from second position, behind the Dutch Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, reigning world champion, who retired in the first laps due to a mechanical failure in the brake of the right rear wheel of the his car. In third and fourth place were the Englishman Lando Norris and the Australian Oscar Piastri, drivers of McLaren, ahead of the Mexican Sergio Perez of Red Bull.

Sainz’s performance, which had no rivals throughout the match, was highly appreciated and in some respects surprising. Two weeks ago he had in fact had to miss the last Grand Prix in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to undergo surgery for appendicitis: until last Thursday his participation in the Australian Grand Prix was in doubt.

In the championship standings Verstappen, who won the first two races, is still in first position with 51 points. Leclerc is second with 47, Perez third with 46 and Sainz fourth with 40 points. The next Grand Prix will be in Japan, in Suzuka, on Sunday 7 April.
