Bundesliga 25th matchday – Saturday: Bayern celebrates a landslide win against Mainz, no winner in the Rhine derby

FC Bayern Munich – 1. FSV Mainz 05 8:1 (3:1)

After reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, FC Bayern Munich can celebrate again in the Bundesliga after winning 8:1 (3:1) against Mainz 05. In an entertaining game, Harry Kane was once again a multiple goalscorer.

In addition to the Englishman Kane (13th, 45th + 7 and 70th), Leon Goretzka (19th and 90th + 2), Thomas Müller (47th), Jamal Musiala (61st) and Serge Gnabry (66th) scored for the Bavarians. In a sometimes wild duel between the second-placed team and the second-to-last in the table, the Munich team were clearly superior thanks to their speed and unusual counter-attack play.

Mainz’s follow-up goal in the meantime, a remarkable free kick goal to make it 1-2 by Nadiem Amiri (31st), ultimately did nothing to change the clear defeat. For Bayern it was the biggest win since the 8-0 win against Darmstadt at the end of October 2023. On the next matchday 26, Munich will play in Darmstadt, Mainz will host Bochum.

RB Leipzig – SV Darmstadt 98 2:0 (1:0)

In the battle for the upper echelons of the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig won 2-0 (1-0) against bottom-placed Darmstadt 98. After being eliminated from the Champions League, Leipzig are in fourth place in the league, at least until the evening.

Darmstadt’s Thomas Isherwood (3rd, own goal) gave Leipzig the lead early on. As a result, Leipzig limited itself to good combination football and there was hardly any danger of scoring. Instead, Darmstadt managed to create opportunities partly through counterattacks.

After the half-time break, Leipzig developed significantly more urge to score. It didn’t take long until a goal was scored again: Substitute Christoph Baumgartner (50th) secured Leipzig’s victory after a few minutes of the second half. Darmstadt welcomes another challenging opponent against Munich next week, Leipzig travels to Cologne.

Borussia Mönchengladbach – 1. FC Cologne 3:3 (1:1)

Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln separated 3:3 (1:1) after an exciting Rhenish derby. Gladbach missed out on the hoped-for revenge for the defeat in the first leg. Cologne, on the other hand, remains winless for the fifth time in a row and misses out on points in the relegation battle.

After the early goal for Cologne by Faride Alidou (7th), the score could well have been 2-0. Instead, a mistake by Cologne in the build-up game helped Borussia equalize through Franck Honorat (32′). As a result, Gladbach became stronger. But after half-time Cologne scored again, again it was Alidou (64th). However, Gladbach turned the game around with a double goal from Robin Hack (71st and 73rd), before Damion Downs (79th) saved FC Köln a point with his goal. Next week the Gladbachers will go to Heidenheim, Cologne will play at home against Leipzig.

FC Augsburg – 1. FC Heidenheim 1:0 (1:0)

FC Augsburg continues its hunt for the international places in the Bundesliga with an unspectacular but confident 1-0 (1-0) against 1. FC Heidenheim. For Augsburg it is the third win in a row, while Heidenheim remains winless for the fourth game in a row.

Augsburg mostly controlled the game, but Heidenheim had their first big chance after ten minutes. FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was able to save Jan-Niklas Beste’s shot with difficulty. After a precise corner, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (22nd) scored to make it 1-0 for Augsburg.

After the break, the hosts tried to decide the game. But despite good chances, including a hit on the crossbar, the second goal was not achieved. Heidenheim also carried out some offensive actions, which, however, were equally unsuccessful. Shortly before the end, FCH had the chance to equalize through Florian Pick (81′), but it was a narrow victory for Augsburg. Next week Augsburg plays in Wolfsburg, Heidenheim hosts Mönchengladbach.
