FORT MYERS, Florida – The Red Sox have selected right-hander Brayan Bello as their Opening Day starter, club manager Alex Cora announced Tuesday.

Once Lucas Giolito was out for the entire season for a elbow surgerythe competition to assume that position was between Nick Pivetta and Bello.

It’s been an exciting month for the 24-year-old right-hander, who recently signed a contract extension for six seasons and US$55 million, which includes a club option for a possible seventh season.

“I trust that he is at a stage in his career and in this organization where he seems to be the [lanzador] indicated for that game,” explained Cora. “It is a single [partido], but we showed great commitment to him a few weeks ago. He also committed to us. He goes hand in hand. Last year, he proved that he belongs here. It seems like he’s done everything that’s been asked of him since the offseason and into the preseason. He continues to improve. He will be our guy for Game 1.”

In his first full season last year, Bello went 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA in 28 starts.
