LeBron James has spent more than half his life in the NBA, so it’s a league that he knows perfectly. In his new podcast, in which he deciphers the tactical aspect of this championship, he revealed what annoyed him the most on the pitch.
At 39 years old and after 21 seasons in the NBA, we can say without going too far that LeBron James has seen it all in his career. The depths of the Eastern Conference at its beginnings with the Cavaliers, the titles, the collective disappointments like in 2011… The King has crossed the ages, but always maintaining the same domination, as his record proves.
It’s because he saw so much that fans were eagerly awaiting the first episode of his podcast with JJ Redick. The King wanted to talk about real basketball in a broadcast, to decipher the league with his perspective as a potential best player in history, which is inevitably a gift for observers. What annoys me the most in the NBA is the “two for one” at the end of a quarter. I understand why it’s important to try to have two possessions in the last 30 seconds, compared to one for the opponent. It’s logic, it’s numbers, it’s theoretically a bonus possession. But people no longer take into consideration the previous 4 or 5 possessions. Are we on a good dynamic? Did we take any good shots in the last minute?

Like, how is the other team feeling? If my team didn’t manage to take a good open shot in the last three minutes of the quarter, and we kept losing the ball, it’s stupid to take a shot from 10 meters with 33 seconds left on the clock. Why not wait for the right shot? Because this good shot can start a good dynamic for the end of the match.
Often in the NBA, when a team gets the ball with 40 seconds left in a quarter, it rushes on offense to take a quick shot, even if it means missing and giving the ball back to the opponent, with the simple goal of ‘have the last possession of the period. A strategy that should be questioned according to LeBron James, for a whole bunch of reasons.
The King believes that this potential extra basket can be counterproductive if it goes against the dynamics of the match. He prefers to have only one possession, but to take the best possible shot, to produce the best action, to launch a dynamic which will be much more beneficial for the rest of the match. He may not want to become a coach, but he has ideas.
