A 38-year-old professional boxer was shot dead on the street in Bielefeld. The police are now asking the public for help in finding two suspects. They are on the run and may be armed, police said.

In the case of former boxing professional Besar Nimani, who was shot dead in Bielefeld, the police are looking for two suspects with an arrest warrant and a public search notice. The two 33-year-olds are suspected of having shot the 38-year-old on Saturday in Bielefeld on the street after leaving a hairdressing salon, as the police and public prosecutor’s office announced on Tuesday. They came into the focus of investigators “promptly” after the crime, but were still on the run.

On the night of the crime, special forces searched the apartments of the two suspected perpetrators. The two could not be found in other apartments in downtown Bielefeld that have been searched since then. Investigators warned that those wanted could be armed.

On Tuesday, the police published the names and photos of those they were looking for on their search portal on the Internet and asked the public for help. These are men named Ayman Dawoud Kirit and Hüseyin Akkurt.

Witnesses or accomplices should contact the investigating murder squad with information about possible whereabouts or escape routes, it said. There are arrest warrants from the Bielefeld district court against the accused.

Nimani was no stranger to violence away from the ring

The shots were fired on Saturday evening in the middle of Bielefeld’s pedestrian zone. According to police investigations, Nimani had previously parked his car near the crime scene. He then walked towards a shop. He was then shot at while he was still on the street.

According to the autopsy results, the 38-year-old died from numerous gunshot wounds. “The main injuries were to the chest area,” investigators said. The investigators initially did not provide any further information about the possible background to the crime.

Nimani fought 27 professional fights, of which he won 26, 22 of them by knockout. He was international champion and European light middleweight champion of the IBF association. Away from the ring, Nimani was no stranger to violence either. He was involved in several disputes. After an incident in 2012, he was sentenced to 90 daily rates for intentional bodily harm. In 2016, his wife made an emergency call because she had been beaten by Nimani. There was a police operation.
