And another opportunity to put yourself in a favorable starting position in the tough relegation battle in the Basketball Bundesliga!

Crailsheim/Göttingen – The game at the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim was in the category of being able to get two important points in the Hohenloher livestock auction hall. But nothing came of it, the violets conceded a bitter 76 in front of 2,506 loud spectators:

80 (40:45) defeat. A bitter setback in the fight to qualify for the 16th season in the German elite basket hunter class. In the table cellar, the relegation candidates have now moved even closer together.

Great luck for the BG on Friday: Both the clubs at risk Tübingen and Rostock lost their home games, the Seawolves only losing their twelfth defeat in a row after a long lead against Bamberg in extra time. Next weekend, bottom team Crailsheim will face penultimate Heidelberg – logically there will be a winner who can close the gap on the violets.

BG coach Oliveur Foucart did his team a disservice in Crailsheim. After almost 17 minutes, the Belgian could not control himself after a controversial offensive foul by BG Australian Grant Anticevich against Crailsheim’s Rene Kindzeka and received two “technical fouls” in a row from referee crew chief Robert Lottermoser, not for the first time not a BG friend – calling it a day thus for Foucart, who had to leave the hall interior. Assistant coach Kenneth Desloovere coached the BG for the remaining 23 minutes of the game. Foucart’s coaching influence would certainly have been an advantage in such a basement duel. In addition, it was not appropriate for the Crailsheim hall speaker to verbally accompany Foucart’s exclusion.

In the 40 minutes, the BG was only in the lead six times: 3:2 through Antiveich’s three, 10:9 through Karlis Silins’ three, 13:12 through David DeJulius and then again through a good phase between the 31st and 35th 50 minutes in the final period with threes from DeJulius (63:60), Zach Ensminger (66:60) and Silins (69:66).

The small spark of hope the people of Göttingen had evaporated just as quickly as it had begun to glow. After a 19:13 run, the violets conceded a 10:20 series in the final phase, to which Crailsheim’s Murray-Boyles contributed the last seven points for his team.

The BG and the hosts were very weak in the third quarter. The performance of both teams didn’t really have anything to do with Bundesliga basketball. The BG is not only thin defensively but also offensively. Only after 4:41 minutes did DeJulius score the first points with two free throws. Curious that the Göttingen team won the third round 10:8(!).

Ultimately, there were once again too many failures at the BG. No points from Hartwich and Mönninghoff, just four from Hume and five from Anticevich. That’s just not enough! Zach Ensminger: “We didn’t move the ball well. We should have played more aggressively against the physical defense. The game counted four points. We lacked the willingness.” (haz/gsd)

Oldie but goldie: Crailsheim’s oldie Tremmell Darden (42 years old, number 10, 10 points) prevails against BG Australian Grant Anticevich (5). © Imago/Eibner press photo
