Battle of the cycling stars for seconds on the seventh stage

In the test of strength between the cycling stars around former world champion Remco Evenepoel, the leading group has moved even closer together in the 82nd traditional Paris-Nice tour. On the shortened and rainy seventh stage over 104 kilometers from Nice to Madone d’Utelle on Saturday, the young Belgian star was able to make up time in the overall ranking as second on the day, just like his Slovenian rival Primoz Roglic from the German Bora-hansgrohe team.

Before the final stage on Sunday over 109.3 kilometers with start and finish in Nice, the American Brandon McNulty remains in the leader’s yellow jersey.

Eight seconds ahead

The stage win on Saturday was won by Roglic’s Bora teammate Alexander Vlasov from Russia, who saved an eight-second lead at the finish. The section originally planned from Nice to Auron had to be shortened by almost 70 kilometers by the organizers due to a weather warning, as fresh snow was expected in the Maritime Alps.

In the overall standings, McNulty is now four seconds ahead of his compatriot Matteo Jorgenson. Evenepoel is currently in fourth place, 36 seconds back. Roglic finds himself in sixth place, 1:21 minutes behind.

A short but crisp final stage awaits the drivers on Sunday. Three mountains in the second category and two climbs in the first category have to be overcome before the winner is crowned on the Côte d’Azur.
