Athletic continues in Champions mode and Betis takes a step back against Villarreal

Valverde’s team won (0-2) in Gran Canaria and Marcelino’s team attacked Villamarín (2-3)

Alavés put salvation on track against a Rayo in crisis

MADRID, 10 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Athletic Club beat UD Las Palmas with authority (0-2) this Sunday to put pressure on Atlético de Madrid in the fight for the Champions League zone, on matchday 28 of LaLiga EA Sports that marked a step behind Real Betis in its European aspiration by falling (2-3) against Villarreal, while Deportivo Alavés approached salvation at the expense of Rayo Vallecano (1-0).

The ‘lions’, with the Copa del Rey final on the horizon, continue in Champions mode to try to have a perfect season. Ernesto Valverde’s team was better than the Canary Islands, a UD Las Palmas that is beginning to deflate with the duties of permanence done and far from the European fight in sensations.

Athletic took revenge away from Bilbao, without winning as a visitor since January 4, with goals from Guruzeta and Coco, in their own half, in each half. In the middle of the score between both teams, the score reached 0-1, after a good action by Nico Williams. Sandro, who had just made his debut as a scorer, was the best home team.

The yellows took a step forward after the break and Kirian had the goal, while García Pimienta did not take long to make changes. However, in an unfortunate action, although the Canarian defense has been giving away more than necessary, Coco made it his own 0-2. Athletic thus adds 53 points to the 55 of an Atlético that had lost on Saturday against Cádiz and Las Palmas remains ninth (37).

On the other hand, Betis lost sixth place, in favor of Real Sociedad, when they lost at home against a Villarreal that maintained its good league line after its blow in the Europa League. The ‘submarine’ left after the accident in Marseille (4-0) and added the third consecutive victory in the League to forget about the bottom of the table.

The match at the Benito Villamarín was lively and busy, with a dominance by neighborhoods and a 2-1 score at half-time. Guido Rodríguez’s return to the eleven after injury meant the score was 1-0 at half an hour, but Baena sealed the tie 10 minutes later. The defenses were not good and Betis took advantage of it more in Willian Jose’s 2-1, without it being clear if the ball had gone deep or not.

However, the yellow team remained standing after the restart and found the comeback with an own goal from Sokratis and another from Sörloth, again with Gerard Moreno decisive in the visitors’ offensive actions. The tension was noticeable in the clash between Alberto Moreno and Chimy Ávila that led to the expulsion of both, and Villarreal saved the three points without much complication.

Below, Deportivo Alavés escaped the burn with 32 points, 10 more than Cádiz, which marks the relegation zone, while Rayo remained at 26, after nine days without winning. The Madrid team with Íñigo Pérez on its bench does not know victory and at the Mendizorroza Stadium it was not close to stopping the bleeding.

The first half left few arrivals, but Gorosabel’s goal shortly before half-time earned the Basque fans a goal. Rayo was forced to look for more in the second half, but the second goal almost came through Javi López. Raúl de Tomás also scored offside and the final went to the Vallecanos, but between Sivera and the crossbar, Alavés triumphed.
