Selected for the Olympic Games in the -81 kg category, Frenchman Alpha Djalo was surprised in the first round of the Grand Slam in Antalya, Turkey on Saturday. Djalo, 18th in the world in his category, lost to Bulgarian Georgi Gramatikov, 50th, by ippon after only one minute and 16 seconds of combat.

Surprised after a slip, Djalo was thrown to the ground by his opponent. The referee had given a simple point (waza-ari) but after video refereeing the ippon, meaning defeat for him, was decided. Bronze medalist at the European Championships in November 2023, Djalo was already suffering a defeat in the first round at the Grand Slam in Paris in early February.
