Ralf Rangnick Reveals Insights into Decision to Commit to Austrian National Team

Three weeks after his commitment to the Austrian national team, team boss Ralf Rangnick gave insights into his decision-making process.

“It was not an easy decision and not an easy time,” said the 65-year-old, who turned down a coaching job at Bayern Munich. “We put a lot of time and energy into this task for two years, working towards this starting position. I didn’t want to jeopardize it under any circumstances.”

On the morning of May 1, he decided to remain loyal to the ÖFB. “I just think it would have been difficult,” Rangnick explained on Tuesday when announcing the squad for the test matches against Serbia (June 4) and Switzerland (June 8).

“If I had actually wanted to do it from May 1st, I would have also been coach of Bayern Munich. To actually do both for two and a half months would have been almost impossible,” added Rangnick, with a view to the upcoming EURO 2024 in Germany (14 . June to July 14th).

“I trusted my gut and listened to my heart”

“Even with all the energy I feel, something would have suffered,” emphasized Rangnick. “I didn’t want that and that’s why I trusted my gut, listened to my heart and decided to move on and stay here. In my opinion, that was still the right decision.”

The German, in office since June 2022, also wants to cause a sensation with the ÖFB team at the 2026 World Cup. His contract initially runs until the end of qualification in 2025 and would automatically be extended until the summer of 2026 if he takes part in the World Cup.
