NBA threatens betting scandal
The NBA opens an investigation into a player. The suspicion: The center deliberately allows himself to be replaced several times so that bets on him are successful.
Is the NBA facing a betting scandal? The league has targeted Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors and launched an investigation. This is reported by ESPN. The center is accused of ensuring successful bets through early substitutions in at least two games.

In two cases, oddsmaker DraftKings Sportsbook reported that the “under” bets on Porter were the most popular of the night. Another bookmaker can confirm this. The bets in question are that a player does not exceed values in a certain category in a game.

For Porter, this affected the game on January 26th against the LA Clippers, in which his values were 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.5 successful three-point throws. Bets on the latter in particular were exceptionally popular. Porter ended up playing just four minutes before leaving the game due to an eye injury, the Raptors announced. He didn’t hit a three-pointer.

For prop bets, i.e. bets aimed at the occurrence or non-occurrence of an event during a game, the maximum stake at bookmakers is usually between 1,000 and 2,000 dollars.

According to ESPN, Porter had numerous attempts to bet 10x in the game against the Clippers. “People have really tried everything,” a betting industry source is quoted as saying.
This process is said to have been repeated on March 20 against the Sacramento Kings. Again, Porter only played three minutes and then signed off. The team only gave the reason for illness. Porter scored no points, grabbed two rebounds and consequently did not reach his over/under values (7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds) again.
NBA betting prohibited
Porter missed the last two games for personal reasons. “I don’t doubt injuries. I trust my players. I have never experienced a situation like this before,” said Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic on Monday after the loss to the Brooklyn Nets.
Porter, the brother of Denver star Michael Porter Jr., has been playing in the NBA since 2021. In the current season he was used in 26 games and scored an average of 4.4 points.
