“It was a valuable experience.”

Ahn Se-young (22, Samsung Life Insurance), a leading Korean badminton player, gave meaning to the results of the All England Open, where she failed to win for the second time in a row.

Ahn Se-young, who recently completed a two-week Badminton World Federation (BWF) European expedition, returned to Korea through Incheon International Airport on the 19th (Korean time). Unlike last year, when she returned to gold by winning the All England Open women’s singles title for the first time in 27 years, there was no medal hanging around Ahn Se-young’s neck on this day.

Ahn Se-young, ranked No. 1 in the BWF women’s singles ranking, won the French Open finals held at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena in Paris, France on the 10th, defeating her archenemy Akane Yamaguchi (Japan, ranked 4th) with a game score of 2-1. She faced Yamaguchi again, but she did so in the semi-finals of the All England Open, where she lost 1-2.

Ahn Se-young withdrew from the quarterfinals of the India Open last January, complaining of pain in her right thigh, and received rehabilitation treatment for over a month. In her comeback stage, the French Open, where she won, she seemed to have shaken off the aftereffects of the injury, but in the semi-finals of the All England Open, she was unable to move normally from the start. At the end of her long rally, she lay down on her coat for a while, unable to get up, and even clutched her left thigh instead of her right.

In an interview upon returning to Korea on the 19th, Ahn Se-young said, “I was worried and nervous because these were competitions where I was coming back after receiving rehabilitation treatment for 6 weeks. I am satisfied that I achieved better results than expected under those conditions.”

When asked about her physical condition, Ahn Se-young said, “The French Open was held at the stadium where the 2024 Paris Olympics will be held. Because it was a rehearsal stage, I think I put more effort into it. The aftermath continued to the All England Open. I was lacking technically rather than physically. ( “Even in the semifinals against Yamaguchi, I had cramps in my left thigh,” he said. The semifinals were held three times with over 50 mega rallies. Seyoung Ahn said, “It was difficult, but I also thought, ‘This is why I play badminton,’” she said with a laugh.

Although she failed to win the All England Open for the second time in a row, Ahn Se-young learned more valuable things. He said, “I felt like Yamaguchi had prepared me well. I felt like I was one step behind,” but “I was fortunate that the game was not the Olympics. I thought I should put in more effort and prepare for the match.” raised it.

Ahn Se-young suffered a right knee injury at last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games (AG) and her performance was worse than before. She was unable to completely shake off the aftereffects this year as well. But she also learned how to compete in situations where her body couldn’t move as it should.

Ahn Se-young said calmly, “It was my first time getting injured, so I didn’t know how to deal with it. But I think it meant a lot to play the game even in the worst condition.” Ahn Se-young then expressed her determination, saying, “She plans to manage her participation in a way that allows her to maintain first place in the rankings. She will make up for her shortcomings and show further improvement.”
