A setback for OM de Gasset who loses to Rennes

Three days after a real heatwave at Villarreal (3-1) in the round of 16 of the Europa League, OM returned to Ligue 1 for the 26th day. But after a marathon of seven matches in 24 days, the Olympians, who had three victories in the Championship, did not go the distance. Blunt, they fell again, this time on the lawn of Roazhon Park. More realistically, Rennes was able to count on Martin Terrier’s sixth goal in Ligue 1 (21st) and a penalty from Benjamin Bourigeaud (78th) to snatch the victory (2-0).

“We are going to have to manage fatigue,” admitted Jean-Louis Gasset this Saturday at a press conference. Julien Stéphan’s players knew this and took advantage of it from the start by putting their foot on the ball. If Guéla Doué (9th) and Ludovic Blas (20th) first warmed the gloves of Pau Lopez, Terrier, on a good serve from Amine Gouiri, forced the Spanish goalkeeper to fetch the ball from the back of his net (21st).

The advantage taken, the Rennes managed their goal in advance. Only two situations triggered by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a shot that Steve Mandanda deflected for a corner (25th) and a free kick slightly deflected by the wall which smashed the right post (71st), really worried the Bretons .

But five minutes later, Adrien Truffert was knocked off balance by Bamo Meité in the area. Calmly, captain Bourigeaud wrong-footed Lopez on a penalty and sealed his team’s success (78th). With this victory, Rennes (8th) returns to the level of OM (7th) with 39 points eight days from the end.

The player: the Bourigeaud symbol

Author of his seventh goal of the season in 24 games, Benjamin Bourigeaud celebrated his 301st match with the Rouge et Noir with dignity. Celebrated by the public with a banner “Arrived one summer for the revival of the SRFC, 300 matches later, Bourig legend of the SRFC”, the captain was, as often, a major element in the success of his team this Sunday afternoon.

50

Martin Terrier scored his 50th goal in all competitions with Rennes, only Benjamin Bourigeaud (63) and Alexander Frei (52) have scored more in the SRFC jersey in the 21st century.
