The owners of the Italian club unveiled their plan to build a new stadium in Milan on Thursday, while the municipality would prefer to renovate San Siro.

The owners of AC Milan unveiled on Thursday their project to build a new stadium with a capacity of 70,000 seats which will accommodate their team but will also be used for events linked to the entertainment industry.

The seven-time European champion club currently shares the same venue with Inter Milan, the historic San Siro, which belongs to the municipality.

The two rival teams in the Lombard capital have been thinking for a long time about each having their own stadium in order to increase their financial income.

For their part, the municipal authorities are proposing to work on a renovation of San Siro. They reaffirmed this last week.

“An American-style stadium”

But during a conference organized Thursday in London by the Financial Times on the economics of football, Gerry Cardinale, founder and director of RedBird Capital, which took control of AC Milan in 2022 for 1.2 billion euros, said he wanted to provide his club with its own venue, taking inspiration from American stadiums, where sporting events and entertainment alternate.

“We will try to bring to Milan an American-style stadium and a site dedicated to live events”he said.

“Of all the cities in Europe, when it comes to a fusion of sports, music and other live events, you would think that Milan would be the ideal place for it, and we are going to do our best to do it”he continued.

Cardinale added that he even plans to create a company capable of building many more stadiums for other Italian clubs.
