1. FC Köln Struggles to Escape Relegation Under New Coach Timo Schultz

After the 16th matchday, 1. FC Köln was in 17th place in the table with 10 points. A lot has happened since then, the new coach Timo Schultz (46) has made a lot of changes in the team.

There were only two defeats in seven games. However, only one win and four draws. In the Schultz table, Cologne is in 13th place in the period between the 17th and 24th matchdays.

Under Schultz: The distance to the safe shore is getting bigger and bigger

When Schultz took over from Steffen Baumgart (52), the gap to a non-relegation zone was only three points – Union Berlin was 15th with 13 points, VfL Bochum was 14th with 16 points.

The sad truth behind the Schultz table: FC is in 13th place below him, but some direct competitors have slipped away in the period since Schultz has been at FC. Bochum collected nine points (8th place in the Schultz table), Union Berlin even collected twelve points (6th place in the Schultz table).

Even if the FC has stabilized somewhat in terms of play under the new coach, the real breakthrough or a turnaround has so far been clearly missed. Instead of being three points behind the saver 15th place, there are now eight points.

The Schultz table from matchdays 17 to 24 of the 2023/24 season:

  • 1. Leverkusen 19
  • 2. Dortmund 14
  • 3. Bremen 14
  • 4. Stuttgart 13
  • 5. FC Bayern 12
  • 6. Union Berlin 12
  • 7. Frankfurt 10
  • 8. Bochum 9
  • 9. M’gladbach 8
  • 10. Heidenheim 8
  • 11. Augsburg 8
  • 12. Leipzig 7
  • 13. 1. FC Cologne 7
  • 14. Wolfsburg 6
  • 15. Hoffenheim 6
  • 16. Mainz 5
  • 17. Freiburg 5
  • 18. Darmstadt 3

For many experts it is clear: 1. FC Cologne is only concerned with 16th place and thus relegation. Former coach Christoph Daum (70) says before the hammer duel against league leaders Bayer Leverkusen (Sunday, March 3, 2024, 3:30 p.m./Dazn and live ticker on EXPRESS.de): “Cologne needs threesomes – that’s clear! Mainz was very strong against Leverkusen recently, they just lost unfortunately.”

FC striker Davie Selke (29), who is back in full training this week after his foot injury, is also expecting relegation: “We have stabilized in defense. I see a positive development. But we have to make sure we continue to score points, preferably three times. 16th place is definitely the goal we have to achieve. This isn’t given to us for free – we also see the development of Mainz.”

Before the derbies against Leverkusen and then in Mönchengladbach, Selke is hoping for an initial spark: “We have to keep working and start winning games, maybe start a small series. There’s no point in knocking someone out here now, but there are still very crucial weeks for us and we have to keep working on it step by step.”
