Yoshimoto Enjoy Baseball: A Fun and Exciting Baseball Class for Kids

Hello, I’m Mir Yokoyama from Tengu, a comedian and writer.
Do you know about “Yoshimoto Enjoy Baseball”? This is a baseball project led by Total Ten Bosch’s Kensuke Fujita. This project collaborated with the Nippon Sport Science University School of Sports Management to hold a baseball class for children of elementary school age and younger at the Nippon Sport Science University baseball club field on Saturday, February 24th. This time, I sneaked into that classroom and will report on it!

The classroom is divided into Parts 1 and 2, and Part 1 is for children aged 4 to 6 who have never played baseball before. I participated in the second division, which was aimed at children aged 6 to 12 (no baseball experience required).

The balance of the coach is amazing!

The coaches this time are Total Ten Bosch’s Fujita-san, former professional baseball player Atsushi Ukumori, and baseball-loving comedian Kotaro Hansaki. Hansaki also works as a coach for Nerima Arcs Jr. Baseball, an elementary school softball baseball team based in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo.

At first, the children looked somewhat nervous. Meanwhile, Hansaki performed a one-shot gag introducing herself.

“This is Kotaro Hansaki! Osu-nobu! Osu-nobu! Osu-nobu! Gas! Pu~! (fart)”

The younger children burst out laughing. However, the older students and their parents looked shocked (lol).

However, at this point Fujita-san’s tsukkomi came in and everyone burst into laughter! As a result, everyone suddenly had a fun atmosphere. It creates an atmosphere unique to comedians.

On the other hand, when Mr. Ukumori gives careful guidance during actual batting and catch-ball practice, I can see that the children are improving quickly, to the point that even as an amateur, I can’t help but wonder, “Is it that much of a difference?” Ta.

The balance between these three coaches was amazing!

A practice that the children will be passionate about!

The warm-up exercises prepared by Nippon Sport Science University students were also a great success. Through exercises such as calisthenics using a ball, a game of catching tails attached to the body, and playing games where the children hit a triangular cone, the children began to smile and speak louder and louder. As expected of Nippon Sport Science University students!

I also loved the atmosphere in which everyone, led by the three coaches, was trying to get the ball rolling, playing catch, catching ground balls, batting off the tee, and base running against each other as a team.

The most exciting part was measuring ball speed with a speed gun. Everyone was surprised when a second grade elementary school boy threw the ball at a speed of 70km/h!

By the way, the first time Hansaki threw it, it was only 60 km, which caused a lot of laughter (lol). However, in the end she achieved a weight of 112 kg, giving off the dignity of a coach.

Significance of Yoshimoto Enjoy Baseball

It seems that the number of baseball players has been decreasing in recent years. There are various reasons why the number of people playing baseball is decreasing, including fewer children, the growing popularity of other sports such as rugby as well as soccer, and the perception that the coaching is tough. That’s what happened.

This project began with the desire to convey the true joy of baseball. At the end of the day’s event, Mr. Fujita said:

“There’s no such thing as having to start playing baseball when you’re in elementary school. You don’t have to start playing baseball in junior high school. If you think, ‘Baseball is fun!’ then you can play it. Nowadays, everyone has the potential to become a major leaguer. Because there is.”

There is no doubt that the eyes of all the children there were shining. A future major leaguer like Shohei Otani may emerge from this group!
