When is the Mining FIL – El Sol de México

With 300 participating publishers and 1,076 activities, the UNAM Mining Palace International Book Fair will celebrate its 45th edition, in which they will have the state of Sinaloa as the guest of honor and will discuss, for the first time, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the different fields of knowledge and current everyday life.

“This event has become a benchmark and a tradition in the city. It is an outstanding achievement, allowing editors to present our productions to the reading public. Fairs play a different and complementary role to that of bookstores, which is our most important medium,” mentioned Hugo Zetser, president of the National Chamber of the Mexican Publishing Industry (CANIEM) during the announcement of the activities of the fair that will take place held from February 22 to March 4 at the Mining Palace.

AI, novel reflection

After announcing that for this edition of the FIL Minería there will be 777 book presentations, 114 talks and conferences, 21 round tables, 39 readings and recitals, 71 workshops, 54 screenings and artistic presentations, the director of this literary meeting, Fernando Macotela, highlighted that among the topics that will be discussed will be those related to AI.

“Artificial Intelligence has entered the cultural scene, overwhelming us. Everyone talks about it, many people fear it, others want to make the best of it. That’s good, thinking about everything that is technological advance,” said the official.

Specialists from the Mexican Academy of Computing, the National Institute of Optical and Electronic Astrophysics, the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute and the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems of the UNAM will participate.

Macotela mentioned that among the activities of the editorial meeting, several tributes and commemorative events dedicated to José Donoso, Truman Capote, Pablo González Casanova, José Agustín, Ignacio Solares, and Milan Kundera, among others, stand out.

SIinaloa, guest of honor

After thanking the invitation to participate in the FIL Minería, Juan Salvador Avilés, general director of the Sinaloan Institute of Culture (ISIC), announced that 45 books from Sinaloa will be presented, as well as 12 conversations, four workshops and three conferences, among other activities .

“We wanted the fair to be an echo of the great Sinaloa writers of all time, such as Inés Arredondo, Gilberto Owen and Enrique González Rojo, as well as painters such as Antonio López Sáenz, whose work is the image of the fair,” said Avilés. . The work of writers such as Jaime Labastida, Elmer Mendoza, Mario Bojórquez and Rubén Rivera will also be recognized.

Which publishers do not participate in Mining FIL?

In 2023, the FIL Minería was involved in controversy, since the Economic Culture Fund (FCE) decided not to be part of the literary meeting, arguing that it is one of the fairs with the highest costs in the country.

This year, Fernando Macotela reported, the call was sent to said publishing house which did not respond. Surprisingly, the Planeta publishing group will not participate in the fair, said the official, because “they do not have the money to attend.”

Macotela acknowledged that last year the number of attendees was better than before the pandemic, but that they expect this year to exceed 70,000 visitors.
