Controversial red card for RKC goalkeeper Vaessen withdrawn

RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen has not been suspended after the controversial red card he received in the away match against Feyenoord. The KNVB disciplinary committee now rules that there is no ‘punishable handball’ and therefore the goalkeeper can simply take action against Fortuna Sittard next Saturday.

Vaessen received a red card ten minutes before half-time after he stormed out of his penalty area and widened a shot from Calvin Stengs. The keeper seemed to use his arm, but Vaessen was quite certain immediately after the moment that the ball did not hit his arm.

After the match he was furious about the decision. “You are being screwed by the referee and the VAR. He went through my ribs, so I find this very strange.”

Vaessen ‘sick to death’ of ‘unjustified’ red card: ‘Will certainly be dismissed’

In front of the ESPN cameras, the goalkeeper even said that he would hand in his football bag if the red card was not dismissed. After today’s news, Vaessen responded with a wink on his own social media.
