The Tragic Aftermath: The Life of a Victim and the Impact of an Attack

“He was a dynamic brother, he liked to be of service to everyone. He loved traveling a lot. I’m talking about it in the past tense because now…”. At the bar of the Morbihan Assize Court, this Thursday, February 8, 2024, the victim’s sister needs a moment to hold back her tears. If she is here, it is to talk about her brother: a Lanesterian attacked with a baseball bat in May 2017 in Lorient. He was 39 years old at the time. In the room, the innocuous sounds of the assize court have stopped. Now, all eyes are on this 54-year-old civil servant from Morocco. And indirectly on his brother, absent from the debates since the start of the week. “It was not possible to bring him here. We are afraid of his reactions. He’s not ready for this. »

Mr. B., the victim, has today returned to live in Lanester, this town “that he knows by heart”. After the attack, he spent almost a month in a coma at the Cavale-Blanche hospital in Brest, before being treated in a rehabilitation center in Kerpape. Emergency surgery following serious head trauma, the now forty-year-old has serious after-effects. “He no longer really has any autonomy. He’s a child in an adult’s body,” sums up his big sister.

Self-taught, “with gold in his hands”, this Lanesterian accumulated temporary work assignments. “What he wanted was to work and then leave to discover other countries. We were six children, with a mother who was a housewife and a father who worked for us all his life. He passed on to us this value of work,” recalls the civil servant. When she continues about her brother, she describes him as a loving person, very close to his nephews and nieces. “He spoke English, Spanish, Arabic. We talked about these trips, about Asia that he loved so much,” continues his brother-in-law. Very close to his family, MB never missed the opportunity to meet them for a meal. “We talked about politics, we had big discussions. We laughed. It’s over now, his sister remembers. When we learned about the attack, it was a shock wave. »

“He became suspicious”

With a permanent disability rate estimated at 39%, the victim’s life today is reduced to alarms. “He has one to prepare his breakfast, one for his lunch, another to call my mother. Otherwise, he forgets. » In addition to memory loss, MB must live with a reduction in vision, hearing, smell and taste. “I have the body of a grandpa, I bump into everything. Everything takes me hours,” he told a psychologist. In addition to the physical after-effects, the Lanesterian also suffers from severe post-traumatic stress. “He has become suspicious, doesn’t want to go out anymore. He is afraid of reliving the attack. His life will never be the same again.” His brother-in-law concludes: “Despite everything, our family needs to make it known that it has no feeling of revenge towards the accused.”
