With three match days to go, Werder Bremen and 1. FC Heidenheim have not mathematically managed to stay in the league, but they have long justifiably had their sights set on something completely different: the European Cup. Depending on the performance of the three German semi-finalists in the Champions and Europa League and the outcome of the DFB Cup final between champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen and second division team 1. FC Kaiserslautern, ninth place in the final table is enough for Europe – or just sixth.
This is also due to the fact that the Bundesliga is still fighting for one of the “European Performance Spots”, which UEFA awards to the two strongest associations in the European Cup of the current season and which mean an additional ticket for the Champions League. The German clubs are currently clearly on track. This results in six possible scenarios:
Scenario 1:
– The Bundesliga does not get an additional Champions League place
– BVB does not win the Champions League or finish at least fourth as CL winners
– Kaiserslautern becomes DFB Cup winner
