Tennis Superstar Jessica Pegula Unexpectedly Parts Ways with Coach David Witt

Tennis superstar Jessica Pegula has completely unexpectedly separated from her coach David Witt. After an extremely successful collaboration, the coach confirmed his departure on Monday. He himself was caught off guard.

“It was a total surprise for me,” Witt said on Monday in the “tennis.com” interview after the Pegula camp announced the separation. The coach saw no signs of this. “I didn’t see it coming,” he said.

“We had a great friendship for over five years, so it’s very hard. I attach great importance to the relationship with my protégés. And I love coaching just as much,” said Witt, who was definitely affected by his departure.

Tennis is a “tough business”

But tennis is a “tough business,” he said. “That’s why I was pretty lucky that I’ve only worked with two players in the last 15 years,” said Witt, who worked successfully with Venus Williams for many years before Pegula.

The collaboration between Witt and the current world number four was no less successful. The coach-player duo came together in 2019, at which point the American was not even among the top 75 in the world. But she won her first tournament under Witt’s leadership.

Four titles on the WTA tour

In the years that followed, Pegula continued to soar unabated. From August 2019 to October 2023, she won a total of four singles titles on the WTA tour, two of them in the so-called 1000 series, the most important events in addition to the Grand Slams and the WTA finals.

In 2023 she also made it into the final of the WTA finals. However, things didn’t always go according to plan for the 29-year-old at the four Grand Slam tournaments. Although she has been in the quarter-finals a total of six times since 2021, she has never managed to get into the semi-finals.
