“Success at the Kanagawa Prefectural Judo Tournament: Young Competitors Shine”

Clockwise from top left: Mr. Tobita, Mr. Takase, Mr. Hirabayashi, and Mr. Komiya.

The Kanagawa Prefectural Judo Tournament was held on January 13th at the Yokohama Budokan, and the pair of Asahi Elementary School 6th graders Momoka Komiya and Sorane Hirabayashi, who belong to the Murota Dojo (directed by Jiro Miyayama and Murota), competed in the “Nage Kata” competition. In the “elementary school student division,” second-year Asahigaoka Junior High School students Aoten Takase and Yuto Tobita won the “throw form junior high school student division.”

The “kata” of judo is practiced by two people in order to learn the rationale of attack and defense. Divided into “tori”, which applies techniques, and “uke”, which receives techniques, they apply techniques, receive techniques, and repeat techniques in a set manner, such as hand techniques, hip techniques, and foot techniques. Overaction is treated as a negative point, and this is a competition that requires precision.

Komiya and Hirabayashi started pairing up around May last year, and say, “We’ve started to get along well with each other.” Both said they will continue to practice judo in junior high school, saying, “I want to do my best to get good grades.”

Takase-san and Tobita-san describe each other as “rivals and friends.” He decided to “practice many times more than most people,” and is enthusiastic, “When we reach our third year, we want to go all over the country together.”
